Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) - Tax Help 2026-2027
United Way of Greater Nashville is recruiting volunteers to provide free tax preparation for low- to moderate-income taxpayers as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. VITA Volunteers provide free tax prep and electronic filing to low- to moderate-income taxpayers.
Each year, over 11,000 Middle Tennesseans rely on this vital service—not only to file their taxes but to access critical tax credits and save on costly preparation fees. Many volunteers begin with no prior tax experience and receive free IRS-certified training. No tax experience is required—just a willingness to learn and a heart for service.
Volunteers are needed during the tax season (January through April) as:
- Tax Preparers
- Tax Greeters
- Interpreters
- Quality Reviewers
No experience necessary. Training is provided! Flexible times and locations available.
You’ll help taxpayers overcome barriers to accessing their tax benefits.
- No experience necessary, training starts in November and continues through the end of February.
- Training provided to become IRS-certified.
- Work with a team of dedicated VITA volunteers.
- Choose the day, hours and location for volunteering.
- Volunteer remotely in the comfort of your home or at a VITA site.
- Volunteer Opportunities available in Davidson, Robertson, Williamson, Dickson, Lincoln, Rutherford, Marshall, Maury, and Montgomery Counties.
In 2026, VITA volunteers helped save taxpayers more than $3.8 million in preparation fees and returned $12.7 million in refunds to the local economy. Please express interest below and a representative will be in touch about next steps.

VITA is a rewarding way to give back to the community while earning up to 18 hours of Continuing Education (CE) credits for Enrolled Agents, CFPs, CPAs, and Non-Credentialed Preparers.
Volunteers can earn up to 14 CE credits by certifying in advanced tax law and serving as a quality reviewer, tax return preparer, or tax law instructor for at least 10 hours. An additional 4 CE credits are available by completing a specialty certification course.

“Volunteering at VITA is the best part of tax season,” said long-time volunteer Gayle Rodrich. “I've met so many great people while making an important contribution to my community. VITA is a vital service to so many people.”
