Volunteers are critical in the aftermath of disaster.
Hands On collaborates with the Nashville Office of Emergency Management and the United Way of Greater Nashville to support preparedness and response efforts for a wide variety of natural and man-made disasters throughout Middle Tennessee. In a disaster, Hands On organizes and manages volunteer projects, and provides support to the grassroots organizations on the ground providing critical relief and recovery services in the affected neighborhoods.

Our program is growing!
As Middle Tennessee continues to rebuild from devastating disasters, Hands On has seen how important it is to have volunteer leaders that are trained and ready to respond. Join a Disaster Volunteer Leader (DVL) Orientation to learn how you can help, then add to your skillset with in-depth training opportunities. Trainings are offered every other month, with additional resources offered as available.
Here's a few of our offerings planned for 2024:
- Disaster Activation Roles and Protocols: An in-depth look at the different Operations Team roles DVLs can fill, incliding Recon teams, Volunteer Reception Centers, Field Staging Areas, and Disaster Squads
- Stop the Bleed
- Leading Volunteers in Times of Disaster

Hands On's Commitment to Disaster Service:
Hands On is honored to partner with the Nashville Office of Emergency Management, the Nashville Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster, fellow nonprofit organizations, and the entire Nashville community to cultivate resilience, promote disaster preparedness between emergencies, and participate in response and recovery efforts following a disaster.
In the wake of a disaster, our mission to meet community needs through service is especially crucial. HON stands ready to respond, as we have through floods, tornadoes, bombings, and a pandemic.
Knowing that the Nashville community looks to HON as a source of information and an avenue to engage in times of emergency, we are committed to preparing our staff and board, enlisting volunteers with specialized skills, building capacity for an effective response, meeting critical needs quickly, and promoting equitable recovery throughout our city.
HON recognizes that disasters disproportionately affect communities of color and other historically excluded groups. We also understand the increasing potential for severe weather events associated with climate change. In response to these challenges, we will support our city, neighbors, and partners throughout the emergency management cycle (mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery), and will utilize our resources to promote equity in all aspects of this cycle.
Hands On and United Way of Greater Nashville are proud members of the Nashville VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster). The Nashville VOAD exists to strengthen areawide disaster coordination and preparedness by sharing programs, policies, and information, and engaging in joint planning, education, and training. During times of active disaster, the Nashville VOAD provides a single point of coordination for all member organizations seeking to assist survivors in our community so that needs are met in the most efficient manner possible.
