Amqui Station Cleanup
Amqui Station is having a cleanup session! We will be power washing porch areas (if the weather is warm enough), completing grounds cleanup, as well as cleaning and organizing the shed and the buildings. Please come prepared for possible cold weather and to work on the described tasks. Snacks will be provided for volunteers and the station has restrooms. Students seeking volunteer hours for class/scholarship requirements need to provide the program information needed for volunteer hours confirmation so that we can make sure that you get credit.
The Amqui Tennessee Passenger Station and Signal Tower was built by the Louisville & Nashville Railroad in 1910. Typical of southern station designs found in the region, it had deeply over-hanging eaves supported by triangular knee braces, had an agent-operator’s office and baggage room, engine room, battery room, second-story signal operator’s room, and passenger waiting rooms. Johnny Cash often visited the signalmen at Amqui Station during the 1970s. He acquired the old train station in 1979, saving it from demolition. Currently, the building operates as a local history museum and community event space. Weekly from Mid-April through October the Amqui Station Farmers Market is at the site.
