Amqui Station Museum Docents
Are you interested in the history of Nashville, Tennessee? Do you know the role that the suburb of Madison played in the development of music in the city? Do you want to find out how Johnny Cash related to the rhythm of trains in his music?
The Amqui Station Museum and Visitors Center hosts a every Sunday from 10AM-1PM from mid-April through October. The farmers market’s mission is to provide a reliable source of fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables and related agricultural products; and additionally, to encourage the public to buy from local small businesses to help foster a sense of community. The assistance of multiple volunteers is vital for support of each market day and help is needed in many areas.
We are currently seeking dedicated volunteers who can commit to longer-term engagement, with 1-2 volunteer shifts per month from roughly 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Sundays. This opportunity is particularly ideal for high school and college students needing to fulfill volunteer hours for course, scholarship, or graduation requirements. This role entails learning about the history of Amqui Station, providing tours of the museum, and staffing the museum to ensure it remains open during market hours. Additional tasks may include helping with recording visitor numbers, taking photos for use in social media posts, and staffing an Amqui Station information table.
The Amqui Tennessee Passenger Station and Signal Tower was built by the Louisville & Nashville Railroad in 1910. Typical of southern station designs found in the region, it had deeply over-hanging eaves supported by triangular knee braces, had an agent-operator’s office and baggage room, engine room, battery room, second-story signal operator’s room, and passenger waiting rooms. Johnny Cash often visited the signalmen at Amqui Station during the 1970s. He acquired the old train station in 1979, saving it from demolition. Today, the station has been restored for use as a museum and educational center. A visitor’s center and pavilion have also been added for special programs and events, such as a weekly farmers market from mid-April through October, Madison Monster Market, Holiday Makers Market, Women’s History Month event, Tennessee Maneuvers Reenactment, Veterans Remembrance Day and Living Encampment.
