Storm Cleanup at Radnor Lake #winterstorm26

Volunteers are needed to work with our park staff as we work through the recovery efforts from Ice Storm Fern. While Radnor Lake State Park & State Natural Area will remain closed to all public use for the next month or so, we have organized additional volunteer opportunities to assist us with preparations to reopen to the public.

We have had overwhelming positive response and offers for assistance to date and appreciate everyone's interest in helping us be able to open safely to the public in the coming month. Thank you in advance for considering volunteering at Radnor Lake!

Information/criteria for volunteering at Radnor Lake is below:
  • All volunteer events will be limited to 40 volunteers; volunteers will be required to check in/out pre-event for a safety briefing and then work with one of our state park rangers on cleaning up our trails system and Otter Creek Road for the extensive damage.
  • Volunteers should expect all tools to be provided by Friends of Radnor Lake.  Please wear good hiking shoes you can hike in, be able to hike 3 miles unassisted carrying tools such as standard rakes & shovels and are asked to commit to work for 3-hour windows with our park ranger staff.
  • We will be unable to accommodate any volunteers who are late or need to leave early due to safety protocols during our clean-up efforts. Given our small park staff and maximizing all our volunteer's time, there will be no exceptions to this for our volunteer efforts. All volunteers will be assigned to work with a ranger from the time they arrive at our west parking area until the time they depart as part of our safety protocols for our volunteer efforts.
  • Most volunteer efforts to start will include current needs such as hauling out/removing broken fence post and wood railing by foot for disposal at designated locations.
  • Assisting ranger staff by dragging/removing trees from the trail system that have been cut ahead of time to restore our 7+ miles of trails.
  • Utilizing rakes and shovels to rehabilitate 7+ miles of trails back to pre-ice storm trail standards at Radnor Lake.
  • Utilizing rakes, shovels, and pruners along Otter Creek Road where machinery is unable to operate for 2+ miles of roadway back to pre-ice storm conditions.
  • Mulching the Lake Trail, Access Trail and/or South Lake Trails via wheelbarrow utilizing our Trees to Trail recycled mulch donated from Parke Tree Company (thank you Parke!).
  • Utilizing backpack blowers to clear roadways, sidewalks, trails of small debris.
  • Friends of Radnor Lake provide bottled water, insect repellent, and other supplies so all you need to do is show up ready to work.
  • For safety reasons and efficient use of our park staff time, we will be unable to offer any individual volunteer opportunities available outside of our 6 posted special volunteer days.
  • We will not be able to schedule and/or advise of any other volunteer dates until these 6 scheduled dates are successfully completed.
  • We will be unable to accept any volunteers not registered for each specific day.
  • Registration is required for any of our volunteer efforts and will be through Hands on

All volunteer efforts at Radnor Lake will be coordinated by Lyndy Maness and any questions-needs for volunteer efforts can be sent to her via email only-Lyndy Maness at the link below. Due to volume of emails and other current administrative needs for our park operations, please allow up to 1 week for a response to individual emails and we will be unable to provide additional information via phone calls during this time.
Thank you again for consideration of volunteering at Radnor Lake.  We want to ensure that our recovery efforts are managed with safety first and utilize everyone's time efficiently.

Our thanks to Nissan North America for their generous financial support of environmental education through the volunteer program and special events at Radnor Lake.
