Opportunity Details
Storm Cleanup in Shelby Park #winterstorm26
Volunteers who are safe and looking for ways to help the neighborhood are welcome to join Friends of Shelby in our cleanup efforts at Shelby Park and Bottoms. Opportunities will become available once new areas are deemed safe for volunteers to enter and work in.
What will volunteers be doing at this event?
Volunteers will help cleanup storm damage in Shelby Park and Bottoms. This could include tasks such as moving tree branches and sticks to the side of the road, sweeping and raking debris off walkways, trail maintenance, picking up garbage, and other tasks as needed.
What is the community impact of this event?
The recent winter storm caused a lot of damage to Shelby, causing portions of it to be obstructed or inaccessible. By removing this debris, volunteers will not only lighten the load on the Maintenance team, but will help the park open to the public faster.
Accessibility:
The storm caused many of our ADA accessible paths to become obstructed, meaning volunteers should be able to move across unpaved or uneven ground. There are port-a-potties throughout the park that may be used, and parking lots are free in the park. Due to the unpredictable nature of the damage caused, no one under the age of 18 may volunteer without their legal guardian present.
What should volunteers bring or wear?
Volunteers should wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, long socks, and long pants for their safety. Any form of personal protective equipment is welcome, but Friends of Shelby will provide gloves and safety goggles for everyone, as well as the necessary tools for the job, a water cooler, and cups.
