Downtown Winter Canvassing #sharing

Whenever the temperature drops to 32 degrees or below (for 3 consecutive hours) Open Table Nashville activates winter canvassing in the downtown area.  Volunteers will meet their canvassing lead at the Nashville Rescue Mission. From there, the group will be divided out - usually into pairs - and given an area of downtown to canvass.

Your lead will provide you with the necessary supplies (think blankets, sleeping bags, hand warmers, gloves, socks, etc.) and the area of downtown you will canvas. Pairs will then go out to their area (in a vehicle and on foot) and check on folks living outdoors. Volunteers will inform people of their shelter options, provide supplies, and transportation to said shelter options. Canvassing goes until 10pm or until your area has been sufficiently covered for the night.

Volunteers should dress warmly and wear shoes they are comfortable walking in. You may also consider bringing water for yourself or a light snack like a granola bar. Volunteers who are comfortable using their vehicle to canvas should make sure they can transport up to 2 individuals at a time.

We will need to contact you before and during canvassing. Before you sign up, please go to Manage My Account/Overview/Personal Information and add your cell phone number to your Hands On profile, so the volunteer coordinator can reach you easily. Thank you!
