Opportunity Details

Purple Martin Roost Educator

Nashville is host to around 100,000+ Purple Martins every year! Purple Martins prefer human-adjacent habitats to roost, including downtown Nashville. Many people don’t know what Purple Martins are or understand the importance them, and may see them as insignificant or even a nuisance

Volunteers like you can help monitor the Purple Martin’s activity in Nashville as well as educate the public about this amazing and unique species!

During the late summer (Jul-Aug), both adults and fledglings gather in a massive flock before migrating to South America for the winter. Monitoring the birds at the Nashville roost can help keep track of the flock’s movements and location preferences.

Additionally, being present at the roost and educating the public about Purple Martins helps ensure that the roost location remains safe for the birds. You will be trained on Purple Martins, the history of the roost, and how to engage with the public.
