Park Natural History Docent
Shelby Bottoms Nature Center is seeking volunteers interested in training as Park Docents. Docents are highly trained volunteers who interpret natural, historical, and cultural features in the park to visitors during informal interactions. Docents receive initial and ongoing training, to which they are encourage to add their own knowledge or individual approaches to education and public interactions.
Docents primarily conduct informal “roaming naturalist” or tabling style education in the park using educational boxes supplied by the Nature Center, but also have the option to assist with more formal educational opportunities such as guided hikes and workshops. Docent volunteer shifts are available during all Nature Center open hours Tuesday-Saturday.
Given the level of training required for docents, we ask for a minimum commitment of 1-2 docent volunteer shifts per month after training.
Duties
- Attend initial docent training and continue to attend ongoing trainings as schedule allows
- Take pre-prepared educational boxes out into the park to provide visitors with educational opportunities, maps, and activities
- Interact with visitors and provide education on the natural, historical, and cultural history of Shelby Bottoms, adjusting this information and the way in which it is conveyed depending on the age and background knowledge of the visitors
- Give simple directions and answer visitor questions when approached while out in the park, or direct visitors to the Nature Center staff when additional help is needed
- If interested, assist Nature Center staff with scheduled public programs such as guided hikes and workshops
