Garden Volunteer
Shelby Bottoms Nature Center is seeking volunteers interested in assisting with the educational garden on a recurring basis. The Nature Center welcomes thousands of visitors each month who are seeking park information, trail maps and directions, and to enjoy the Nature Center museum, grounds, and garden. The educational garden provides examples native plants as well as models of vegetable garden rooted in indigenous and organic agriculture knowledge, and serves as a lab site for plant and insect education. Volunteers interested in helping in the garden should be ready to work outside at various temperatures and get dirty, but do not need to have any previous gardening knowledge or experience.
Garden volunteer shifts are available weekly from 9-4, Tuesday-Saturday after initial training, and are mostly needed during the growing season. Volunteer shifts outside these hours are also available by individual arrangement with the garden coordinator.
Duties
- Assist with garden tasks including weeding, planting, watering, mulching, trimming, and seed collecting as needed and assigned by the garden coordinator
- Interact with park visitors who come up with questions about the garden
- Learn to identify native plants in the garden (some of which resemble plants normally considered weed) to ensure nothing is accidentally removed
