Painting in Shelby Park
Shelby Park is over 110 years old, meaning it needs a fresh coat of paint from time to time to help it look its best. We'll be repainting various structures around the park this summer, like safety bollards on roads or picnic shelters.
What will volunteers be doing at this event?
Volunteers will be cleaning picnic shelters by scrubbing with sandpaper or sweeping ceilings with brooms to prepare them for a fresh coat of paint. Then, using rollers or brushes, volunteers will paint 1-2 coats of outdoor paint. This will happen from ground to ceiling, with some volunteers being asked to stand on ladders or picnic tables.
What is the community impact of this event?
With thousands of visitors at the park each year, it's important that we not only keep everyone safe, but make them feel welcome and at ease. By keeping our road bollards visible, we will be helping drivers stay on course and away from any pedestrians, animals, or hazards. With freshly-painted picnic shelters, visitors coming here for any reason will feel excited to celebrate any occasion under their shade. In the summer heat, these shelters are also important for giving people shade and a place to rest.
Accessibility:
This event will require the use of at least one hand that can grip a paint brush or paint roller. Ideally, volunteers will be able to stand on top of a picnic table or small ladder to reach the ceiling where the bulk of the painting is done. There is some work to be done from the ground on the poles should someone feel uncomfortable climbing, though those slots will be limited. This event will involve a lot of arm movement, as well as the ability to move your head/neck around to look up. Not all shelters are near a restroom, but most have a port-a-potty nearby to use. There is typically plenty of parking available a short walk from the work site.
Important allergen note: While it's possible to encounter wasps and bees all over the park, we've found many wasps enjoy making small nests in picnic shelters during the summer months. During the cleaning portion of the event, these will be knocked down with a broom. If you are severely allergic to wasps, please keep this in mind!
What should volunteers bring or wear?
Volunteers should wear clothing that they don't mind getting paint on, as the paint we use will most likely stain if it gets on you (the paint will wash off of skin with warm water and soap). Please do not wear anything that you care about keeping clean!
Besides that, we would recommend sun protection like hats or sunglasses, and a reusable water bottle. Friends of Shelby will provide all of the necessary tools, disposable gloves, safety goggles and masks, and ladders, as well as extra sunscreen, bug spray, and water.
What’s next?
Once you sign up, you will receive a confirmation email. CD will send out a pre-event email with the meeting location, weather forecast, and their contact information the week of the event.
