Our Hands Community Garden: Planting Party!

Please note that "expressing interest" on our page on Hands On will NOT sign you up for this shift nor does our page on Hands On reflect the accurate number of spots available for any given shift. See below for more information.

About the Event:
Interested in increasing land access and promoting community agriculture in Nashville? Come volunteer with The Our Hands Community Garden at Alameda Christian Church!

Compelled to address food insecurity issues, provide fresh, healthy produce to the community coupled with the blessing of an abundance of land, the Our Hands Garden Ministry was birthed spring 2010. Produce from the garden, manned on a volunteer basis, is given away free to residents of senior and low-income housing facilities, members of the community on give-away Saturdays, and to our senior members. The garden ministry also works in partnership with the Society of St. Andrew (SOSA) a national gleaning network. SOSA gleans produce directly from area farms which is then donated to the Our Hands Garden Ministry to distribute and deliver. The ministry team also gleans directly from local Farmers Markets in partnership with SOSA.

As a volunteer, you’ll help strengthen the program by planting, weeding, harvesting, and more with the Our Hands Garden leaders! Come roll up your sleeves, get your hands in the soil, and help sustain a thriving community garden that grows more than just vegetables!

What to Expect from the Opportunity:
Volunteers at Our Hands Garden get their hands dirty (literally) alongside staff to support the community that grows in our space. Whether broad forking unbroken ground to develop new garden plots and perennial beds or planting starts for the season, you can be certain to get your body moving in a gorgeous fresh air setting while supporting the work of increasing land access for folks wanting to grow their own food!

At this event, volunteers will help get transplants into the in-ground garden and raised beds to kick-off the growing season!

Registration:
We use a third-party website for our shift sign ups. After expressing interest, our Volunteer Engagement Manager will send you a link to sign up for your desired shift.

At this point, we will share more information about the workday, including details on what to wear/bring and directions to the farm. You may also visit The Nashville Food Project website to locate volunteer opportunities and register for your desired event!
