Classroom Volunteer- Teach about Financial Literacy

About Junior Achievement
Junior Achievement (JA) is a non-profit that empowers K-12 students to own their economic success in adulthood. Our programs teach students critical skills in financial literacy, career readiness, and entrepreneurship so that they can connect what they learn in the classroom to the "real world."

What You Will Do
Volunteers visit a Kindergarten/1st grade classroom and act as a "teacher for the morning." Volunteers play games, watch videos, complete worksheets, and tell stories that introduce kids to age-appropriate financial literacy concepts (like the difference between wants and needs, or how businesses support cities). JA provides training, classroom materials, and lessons so that volunteers are set up for success!

Before You Volunteer

  • In order to participate, you must be able to attend a 1-hour training (this can be scheduled virtually, or at JA's office.
  • You must be able to pick up your "kit" of classroom materials from our Berry Hill office by Monday, March 24th. In addition to training
  • Volunteers should plan to spend about 1 hour reviewing the classroom lessons and preparing their kit of materials prior to their volunteer session.
  • All volunteers must sign JA USA's code of conduct and have a valid government ID in order to work with students

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need to have experience teaching or working with students to participate?
    • No! JA provides thorough training to all of our volunteers to prepare them for their volunteer experience. Most of our volunteers come from corporate backgrounds and may not have ever spent time in a school setting.
  • Do I need to create any lessons/activities?
    • No! JA provides a volunteer handbook outlining all activities, which includes suggested talking points and scripts. Many volunteers choose to read directly from the handbook their first time around.
  • How does JA support me during my volunteer experience?
    • On your day of volunteering, a JA staff member will be on-site to provide hands-on support. They will float between classrooms to check in on all volunteers throughout the day. Additionally, teachers will remain in the classroom at all times with volunteers to assist them as needed.
  • What if I don't have time to participate in training or pick up my classroom kit?
    • Unfortunately, both of these steps are required to participate in this experience.
  • Do I need to complete a background check to participate?
    • Background checks are NOT required to participate since volunteers will be under the supervision of school and JA staff. Any individuals with a criminal history, including but not limited to abuse, neglect, domestic violence, sexual misconduct, or other crimes involving children may NOT participate under any circumstances. All volunteers are required to sign JA USA's code of conduct of conduct agreeing to uphold Junior Achievement's standards for safe behavior.
  • How am I making a difference by volunteering?
    • JA volunteers have the opportunity to share stories about their unique life experiences that can expand horizons for students. Many JA alumni reflect that their classroom volunteers from years ago exposed them to career paths that they never knew existed, or helped them feel more confident about their ability to accomplish their personal and professional goals.
