Weed Wrangle at Shelby Park - 11th Annual Invasive Plant Removal
Join your community members in the 11th annual Weed Wrangle as we spend time in the woods together, chatting and restoring the ecological health of your public lands! At this volunteer opportunity, we will be removing invasive plant species that are choking out our native forests. This special edition of our typical Restore the Forest events is a part of Weed Wrangle, a one-day volunteer initiative to removal invasive plant species. More information on Weed Wrangle can be found here https://www.weedwrangle.org/
What will volunteers be doing at this event?
Volunteers will be removing invasive plant species from the forest in Shelby Park and Bottoms. This process may be relatively strenuous, as we'll be bending and pulling plants in the forest while using landscaping tools.
What is the community impact of this event?
Invasive species are organisms (in this case, plants) which are introduced to habitats where it is not native and harms the environment, human health, or the economy. In Shelby Park and Bottoms, a few species in particular have spread and pose a serious threat, largely bush honeysuckle and privet. By removing these plants, we will not only be preserving the health of our native forest, but also the health of the park and Nashville's waterways.
Accessibility:
We will meet at the Shelby Park Community Center's tennis court parking lot and walk a short distance to Beech Grove Hill (the forest between the Community Center and Lake Sevier). For this event, we will be carrying heavy tools over uneven ground. We will begin on primitive trails but quickly venture off-trail to begin removal. Please expect to wear clothing you don't mind getting dirty, as this is physical labor in the woods. Closed-toe shoes and long pants are required. The Community Center has restrooms available starting at 10 AM.
What to bring?
I would recommend bringing your own water bottle. All of the necessary tools, gloves, safety goggles, and plant identification manuals will be provided, as well as some additional water and snacks. Please make sure to wear long pants and close-toed shoes (hiking or gardening boots work well).
What’s next?
If you sign up for this event, you will receive a reminder email before the event with specific instructions regarding parking and any other necessary information.
Any questions? Feel free to send me an email at cd@friendsofshelby.org. We hope to see you out there!
