Cold Weather Shelter Bus Navigators
Navigating extreme weather events can be difficult for Nashville residents but especially traumatic for those who are unhoused. In these weather situations, the Metro Office of Homeless Services operates an Extreme Weather Overflow Shelter. Open only during specific conditions during the cold weather season or severe weather, the Overflow Shelter is used once primary shelters such as the Nashville Rescue Mission and Room In The Inn are full.
Cold Weather Shelter Bus Navigators are urgently needed to help with bus guidance for homeless guests needing a warm place to sleep at Metro’s Extreme Weather Overflow Shelter. Staff members will be leading the volunteer effort and can answer questions!
Although volunteer days are pre-populated, The Cold Weather Overflow Shelter operations are only announced and declared open 24 hours in advance. You will receive an email notification each time shelter is open and if you are needed.
Volunteer duties will include:
- Greeting guests and showing them where to wait for the next bus to the shelter
- Helping guests get onto the correct bus so they can be housed warmly for the night
Preparation
- Volunteers should bring any water/snacks for themselves that they think they may need.
- Volunteers should bring a warm jacket, and gloves, and wear comfortable shoes as they may be outdoors talking to guests and on their feet throughout their shift.
- Volunteers will meet Metro Office of Homeless Services staff at terminal 23B (it's the first floor of the bus depot) across from the historic Sunday School Publishing Board
- Volunteers should be prepared to stand for the entire shift.
VISION The Metro Office of Homeless Services is designated to reduce homelessness in Nashville, using a client-centered and compassionate approach, with the help of our community partner, making homelessness a rate occurrence.
MISSION Restoring hope and dignity to our unhoused neighbors by collaborating with the community, providing a network of service providers and guiding a data driven, innovative, and trauma-informed Housing First approach, offered with a spirit of deep compassion, care and commitment.
